Schmidt studied painting, illustration and etching at Weimar Saxon Grand Ducal Art School, where he was a student of Albert Heinrich Brendel and Theodor Hagen. He became a professor at the school in 1901. Schmidt is best known for his historical paintings, especially those relating to the history of the Weimar Republic and the life of Goethe.
