Born Gladys Gardner into a large family in Rockland, Maine, Gladys married Alfred Prescott in 1924. Gladys worked as a seamstress and Alfred as a cook on a sea tanker, and later as a manager at a fish processing plant. By all accounts, Gladys took up painting later in life, inspired by the beauty of her native Maine.
