Antique Chinese Southern Official's Low Back Armchair, Late Qing Dynasty
Chinese Southern Official’s Armchair, Northern China, Probably Shanxi or Henan Province
Of dense wood, possibly Chinese Elmwood or Yumu (Northern Elm) in the 'Southern Official' style, with floral carved panel splat, under gently bent top rail, with bowed arms, old and new repairs to joints. Cylindrical legs joined by an apron, stretchers, and a footrest. Well worn.
The ‘southern official' armchair’ is characterized by armrests and crestrail that turn down into the vertical posts.
