Gouache on illustration board, signed and dated lower right in white paint over pencil. 19 3/4” x 14 3/4”, matted and framed to 28” x 21 1/2”.

Alice Balch was born in Swampscott and raised in Boston. She married Robert Bowditch Stone, a lawyer, in 1908, and died in Concord, NH in 1969. Alice Balch Stone art is best known for her coastal views and landscapes. Her work focuses on composing landscapes with an intimacy that draws the viewer in—attention to foregrounds, and trees spilling off the page, as we see in this lovely work.
